1996 continues Personae and then closes it. The figures still take roles that belong to a life, a saint, a mother, two figures in a garden. Tributo a mi Madre is not a motif. It is a debt painted while the series is still able to hold a person in costume. The line around the figure changes: the free contour of 1995 becomes a geometric bound. The person is still being held. The hold is tightening.
In the fall the studio moves to New York. The first painting made there, in the apartment on Waverly Place, is a large Bolívar on a white horse, and the last work of Personae. The black outline that had enclosed the figure disappears. A series ends when the question inside it is finished, not when a calendar says so.
Engendros follows: a short group in black, white, and gray, begun in October. It proposed a missing link between person and spirit, a third form that might join what 1995 had split. The proposition did not hold. There is no such link that can be painted as another body. The series closed because the thought closed.
Works from the year were shown in Correa, Orlando City Hall Terrace Gallery, and in Personajes, Sala Alternativa Elvira Neri, Caracas.
