1997 opens Personajes II. The Latin title Personae is dropped. The series is named in Spanish, the language of the first house, and it will run through 1998 and 1999.
This is a turning point in the practice, though it was not named as one while it was being painted. The body is no longer the closed muñeca of 1995. Its structure is opened. The line that had belonged to the soul in The Intruders now moves through the figure and into the ground. Body and spirit are no longer two series. They occupy one field.
In the faces, one eye is empty and one is full. Two conditions in one head. From this year the work treats what is painful and what can be lived with as a single structure, not as consolation, as form. That construction remains in the practice after this date.
The figures still take roles: a woman, a woman with a saxophone, a woman with a dog, a wedding, now at mid-large and large scale. Late in the year, from the New York studio, a group inside the series, Memorias del Corral, returns to the grandmother’s yard. The corral was meant for chickens. The memory is of cats. Distance from home does not erase the house. It concentrates it.
Works from the year were shown in the two-person exhibition Myths and Symbols of Latin America, Rosenberg Gallery, New York, and in the I Bienal Nacional del Táchira, Ateneo del Táchira, San Cristóbal.

1997 abre Personajes II.
