VIRTUAL OVERLOOK | 2007 - 2011
1998 continues Personajes II. The roles are already known: the menina, the Madonna, the Liberator. The year does not invent a new subject. It asks whether a picture can hold two forces at once, figure and ground, presence and the space that presses on it.
That question is not only formal. It is the same conviction that runs through the decade: nothing stands alone. The background must have the same force as the person, or the person is a cutout. Empty eye and full eye remain from 1997. What changes is the space around them.
Las Meninas return because Velázquez had already posed a problem of rank: attendants painted at the same level as kings. The dress takes a large part of the canvas. Line, plane, and interval in the costume become the work. The garment is no longer clothing. It is how a life occupies space.
The year is therefore an aesthetic investigation carried by a conceptual one. The subject had been solved. The picture had not.
Works from the year were shown in Personajes II, Washington Square East Galleries, New York; in Seven Women and a Cat, University of Central Florida, Orlando; and in Personajes, Intrusos y Engendros, Galería Universitaria Braulio Salazar, Valencia.
