VIRTUAL OVERLOOK | 2007 - 2011
2003 is the year the practice moved from New York to Connecticut, and stayed there. The year was an investigation. It produced two series, Animals from the Carousel and Ilusión.
The carousel is taken as a figure of a life. The structure is round, as the earth is round, and it turns. A line of children waits. The wheel stops. One group gets down. Another gets on. A few have already chosen the animal, and run for it. Others take what they like when it is in front of them, or take what is left. On the ride the division continues. One child stands, one hand, no hands. Another holds the animal and is carried. A third holds the pole as if the ride might end him. A bell sounds, without warning. They get down, and the next line gets on.
The paintings were made from that comparison, and from a study of old carousels. Sketches and studies of the animals came first. The series itself is on paper, acrylic and charcoal on large sheets of Arches. Twenty-four were made. Eight are shown. The others have not been located.
Ilusión ran beside it. Mythology, the present day, and a satirical edge are set in the same picture. The personajes return, more refined than before. The features are no longer exaggerated. The series was acquired entire by a private collector. The paintings are not available to be photographed, and they are not reproduced here.
